Oferta
Existen 286 IES, de las cuales 80 son públicas (32 universidades) y 206 (48 universidades) son privadas. En total, a agosto de 2011, se ofrecen en Colombia 10.772 programas de educación superior, incluidos los programas técnicos profesionales y tecnológicos ofrecidos por el Sena.
Cobertura
En 2010, se graduaron en Colombia 625.466 bachilleres y para el año 2014 se estima serán cerca de 700.000 estudiantes. Durante el 2011 (en el primer y segundo semestre del año) ingresaron 514.990 jóvenes a la educación superior.
Matriculados
A 2010, en todo el país hay 1′674.420 estudiantes en el sistema de la educación superior, de los cuales 1′587.928 se encuentran matriculados en programas de pregrado (técnico profesional, tecnológico o universitario) y 86.492 en programas de posgrado (especialización, maestría o doctorado).
Metas
La tasa de cobertura en educación superior es de 39,8%, medida como el número de estudiantes de pregrado sobre la población entre los 17 y 21 años. Para el 2014 la meta de cobertura en este nivel de formación es de 50%, lo que implica una matrícula en pregrado de 2′182.272 estudiantes, de los cuales se espera que 1′358.164 estén en IES públicas y 824.108 en IES privadas.
Deserción
La tasa de deserción por cohorte es de 45%, es decir que de cada 100 estudiantes que ingresan a la educación superior, 55 eventualmente se gradúan, mientras 45 nunca lo hacen. Del total de estudiantes matriculados en 2010 (1′674.4202), 927.295 están en IES públicas y 747.125 en IES privadas. En 2002 estas cifran era de 416.722 y 583.426 estudiantes, respectivamente.
En la Usco
La cobertura de la Universidad Surcolombiana pasó del 6.96% en el 2009 al 7.02% en el 2010. Se presentó un incremento del 4% en el ingreso de estudiantes del segundo periodo académico del 2010 con respecto al 2009, pasando de 9.024 a 9.388, lo que representa un avance en el plan de desarrollo de un 8% sin cumplirse la meta del 10% prevista. El crecimiento de cupos anual por programas fue del 32% al incrementarse de 3.285 cupos en la vigencia anterior a 4845.
